2014-15 HURRICANE COACHING STAFF

Coach Joe Kinnan returned to Manatee High, his alma mater, in 1981 to become head football coach and athletic director. In his 29th seasons, Kinnan has compiled a 280-70 record with 18 districts, 15 state quarter-finalists, 14 state semi-finalists, two state runner-up and five state championships. He officially retired from coaching and teaching in January 2001 and for three years was the Chief Operating Officer for the Police Athletic League and Charter Schools of Manatee County. In April 2005 Coach Kinnan once again "came home" to Manatee High as the head football coach.

Some of the many honors bestowed on Coach Kinnan include the following:
1) Florida Athletic Coaches Association Football Coach of the Year; 2) Head football coach of the Florida-Georgia All Star Game; 3) Inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame; 4) WWSB Channel 7 Lifetime Achievement Award. 5) Elected to Florida’s All Century Coaching Team, 1907-2007.

After graduating from Manatee High in 1963, Kinnan attended Duke University on a football scholarship. He later transferred to Florida State University where he started for two years on the football team. He received both a bachelors and masters degree from FSU in education.

 

 

Kinnan's coaching career has included positions at four universities: Florida State, Arkansas, Southern Illinois, and Eastern Kentucky. While offensive coordinator at EKU, the Colonels were 1AA National Champions in 1979 and runners-up in 1980. Coach Kinnan and his wife Linda, have one son, Joe Jr. and one grandson, Jay (9-1/2 years). 

JIM PHELAN

Jim is a graduate of Parkway West High School in St. Louis, Missouri where he lettered in football and basketball. Jim has coached high school for 33 years at six different high schools. This will be his 17th year at Manatee. He and his wife Angelina have two daughters, Elvita and Margarida.

CHUCK SANDBERG

B.S University of Florida

M.S. Nova University

A graduate of Winter Park HS, Chuck lettered in 3 sports. He played 2 years at UF and was

drafted by the Boston Red Sox. He is in his 28th year on the football staff. His hobbies include jogging, golfing and weight training. He and his wife Kelsie have two sons, Chase (19), Cord (18), and a daughter Callee (15).

STEVE PEEBLES

Offensive Line

B.S. Southwestern Kansas College, M.S. Nova University, ED. Specialist Nova University

Steve is a native of Bradenton and a 1984 graduate of Manatee High, where he was a Captain of the 1983 State Championship Team. He played college football at Southwestern Kansas where he was a 4 year starter and a two time all-conference player as an offensive guard. He has been teaching math and coaching football at Manatee for 25 years. His hobbies include golfing, fishing, and scuba diving.

CHRIS CONBOY

Quarterbacks

B.A. St. Thomas University, M.S. Western Maryland College

Chris is a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, lettering in football and baseball, Coach

Conboy is entering his 15th season coaching at Manatee High School. He and his wife Melissa have two sons, Christopher (9) and Collin (2).

CORD GRAHAM

Runningbacks

B.S. University of South Florida

Cord played quarterback at Manatee High and graduated in 2005. He graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Social Studies. This is his first year as the runningbacks coach.

He has been the JV Head Coach for Manatee High for the last three years.

DENNIS STALLARD

Special Teams

B.S. Florida State University

Dennis is a graduate of Edgewater High School in Orlando where he lettered in football, track and crew. He also played one year of football at FSU. Moving to Bradenton in 1986, he enters his 41st year of teaching and coaching. Currently he teaches accounting and OJT and works with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Married to Marcia, they have two daughters, Kristin and Kelly and 3 grandsons, Ben, Will and Rylan.

STEVE GULASH

Defensive Line

Coach Gulash is a native of Bradenton, his father, Dick Gulash, played quarterback for Manatee in1968. Steve was a member of the Hurricanes ‘92 State Championship team. He was selected to play in the North South All-Star game. Gulash signed to play football at Eastern Kentucky and was an All Conference Defensive Tackle in ‘94 and ‘95. He has had 8 defensive linemen make All State and signed scholarships his last 7 years along with 2 of the top 5 defensive linemen in the nation. In 2012 rivals named Manatee’s defensive line the best in the country.

DOMONIQUE DUNBAR

Cornerbacks

B.S. University of Louisville

Domonique played quarterback for Manatee and played in the CaliFlorida All Star Game. He played Cornerback for the University of Louisville from 2000-2004. He graduated from the University of Louisville with a B.S. in Sports Administration. He played 3 years of Arena Football from 06-08 and signed as a free agent ‘05 with the Eagles. Coach Dunbar has two kids, Demi and Dallas Dunbar.

CHAD CHOATE

Linebackers

B.S. University of South Florida

Chad played football and graduated from Manatee High in 2003. He graduated from the University of South Florida in 2007. Chad has coached at Braden River and Cardinal Mooney as Defensive Coordinator prior to coaching at Manatee. He is married to Ashley, a 2002 graduate of Manatee & JV Cheerleading Coach and they have a son, Wesley (9) and daughter Camryn (6). Chad is a Hurricane legacy from his grandfather who was at Manatee High for 30+ years as a coach, dean and principal.

RICH LANSKY

Strength and Conditioning Coach

B.S. Syracuse University

Rich grew up in the New York/New Jersey area. He graduated from Livingston High School in New Jersey, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He began competitive lifting while at Syracuse, winning his weight class at the APANationals in 1992. Locally, he has coached with Booker football, Venice wrestling, Lakeland Christian football and Eckerd College rugby. He served as an international coach with USAWeightlifting from 1998-2007. This is his 3rd season coaching at Manatee. He and his wife, Ann, have been married for 22 years.

ERICA BUEHNING

Head Athletic Trainer

Florida Gulf Coast University

Erica graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 2010. After graduation, she interned as an Athletic Trainer at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. From there she worked for two years at Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, FL while earning her Master’s in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy. This is her 2nd year as Head Athletic Trainer at Manatee High School.

CHRIS PETERS

Asst. Athletic Trainer

B.A. Interdisciplinary Studies - University of Wisconsin - Parkside

MEd Guidance & Counseling - Carthage College

A 1995 graduate of Manatee High, Chris served as a student athletic trainer for 3 1/2 years, including the 1992 State Championship season. In 2001 he earned his B.A. from University of Wisconsin - Parkside and passed the National Athletic Trainers’ Association certification exam. In 2004 he received his Master’s in Education from Carthage College. Chris and his wife Danette (Gartner), a 1994 MHS graduate, have 2 sons, Riley (11) and Joel (8).

JIM NELSON

Flagler College

Columbia Seminary

Jim grew up in Memphis, TN then moved to St Augustine and graduated from Flagler College in 1983, then came from Columbia Seminary in 1989. He then moved to Bradenton to begin Young Life in 1990. He has worked with teenagers at Manatee High since that time. He is a Presbyterian pastor and has been an avid Hurricane fan for the last two decades.

Daniel S. Lamar, M.D.

A native of Anna Maria Island, Daniel S. Lamar, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon and

Sports Medicine Specialist with Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, specializes

in sports medicine, total joint replacement, cartilage rejuvenation, pediatric injuries

and arthroscopy. In addition to serving as team physician for the Manatee High

School Hurricanes, Dr. Lamar also serves as sports medicine physician to the Tampa

Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Pirates, U.S. Soccer Team and IMG Academies, and is

medical director for Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Having completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Lamar continued his medical training with a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the University of Miami. Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Lamar has served as Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
